Rotary is about Fellowship and Fellowship develops not only at weekly meetings and fundraising events related to good causes but also at social occasions.
Thurso Rotary Club has over the years developed a feeling for friendship and fellowship through many and variety social activites. Some Club events for members, others with invited guest and on occasions social events which are ioen to the general public. Colections of photographs from some those events may be found through the links on the main Photoarchive Page.
Here is a list of some of those occasions with an introductory picture where one exists:
Burns Suppers
Thurso Rotary Club Burns Supper have been renowned as amongst the best in Caithness and maybe even the whole country. Seperb speakers, a fine meal and a great atmosphere have contributed to memorable occasions over the years.
Ladies Nights and Guest Nights
Ladies Night, when Rotarians invited spouses and guest to dinner, was always an event looked forward to in the Rotary calendar. With the introduction of Ladies membership of the Club it was felt approapriate to change the name and now we have a Guest Night. It is essentially the same with an invited speaker and Rotarians taking spouses, partners and guests.
Cheese and Wine Evenings
For some years Cheese and Wine evenings were occasions for socialising and raising funds for good causes. More recently the cheese and wine element alnong with other snacks has been an intregal element of some other occasion such as the Speechmaking in North Highland College. The refreshments at those events has been the responsibility of Rotarian Peter Murchison and he has not been lacking in organisation or speard for the refreshments table.
Games Nights - Tin Pin Bowling, Outdoor Bowling, indoor games, etc.
Games evenving have been a feature of the Club's activities over many years. The chosen event has depended to a alrge extent on the special interest and contacts of the sports officer of the time. However, availiablity of facilities has clearly also been a factor in the chosen sporting occasion. The Club previously had a very enjoyable annual outing to the Ice Rink at Brora for Curling but the closure of this facility brought an end to this activity.
Of course, the Club has been a regular competitor in the District's Gavel competition and our 'youngsters' (and Peter Murchison!) have peformed admirably. Though we have not won the competition ( probably by being to sporting on occasion) we have performed well enough consider that the decision to take part was worthwhile.
Business Dinners
Business Dinners have been both fundraising and social events for the Club. Members have been able to enjoy an evening of entertainment with their fellow Rotarians, friends and members of the general public and all in the interest of supporting an International or Local Project of some importance.
Thurso Rotary Club held very successful Charity Business Dinner in the Pentland Hotel in 2008. The picture shows organiser Rotarian John Owens (standing left), President John Hook (seated left on couch) and speaker Ian Woodall (seated centre of couch beside John Hook) with some of the Rotarians and members of the business community who attended the event.
Rotary Club of Thurso were very pleased to have a Mountaineer, Author and Speaker of the calibre of Ian Woodhall at their Business Dinner.Ian Woodall stepped onto the summit of Mount Everest and into history, becoming one of only a handful of mountaineers to have climbed the highest mountain in the world from both its south and north sides. This, and other achievements, prepared him well to be a keynote after dinner speaker and his talk on this occasion with thoroughly enthralling.
