Special Projects

The Club have been involved in many special projects over the years.  Just a few of the more important and more recent ones are listed below and more detailed information added where necessary under the subpages.

  • Meadow Well Refurbishment

For hundred's of years the Meadow Well provided the water supply for Thurso.  It was an essential part of Thurso life as apart from the need for good quality water it was also a meeting point for local citizens.  Fisherwome met there to sell their fish and, of course, catch up on the news of the day.

In 1981, and again some years later, the Thurso Rotary Club refurbished the well and it stands now as a tourist attraction on one of the Thurso Town Walks in the Guide to Historic Thurso.

  • The Mall Walk - For details of this hugely important and expensive programme which won much acclaim and awards see the attached subpage.

  • Thurso Town Guide

Thurso Rotarians and others involved in the sponsorship of Alan McIvor's guide to old Thurso gathered at the Pentland Hotel for the official launch of the publication. Alan is seen presenting a copy to Rotary Secretary Trevor Williams.

Copies of the publication are a must for locals and tourists alike and can be purchase from Caithness Horisons at the Town Hall and through some of the shops in the town.

  • Beach Cleans - a regular programme is help over the summer month.  More details are shown in the subpage.

  • Cemetery Bridge Replacement

The Thurso Cemetery Bridge was an integral part of the Clubs redevolpment of the Mall and River walk and a great disappoint ment to Rotary members and the town as whole when the bridge was swept away by flood water.

The Club, along with other groups, pressed the Highland hard for a replacement bridge and some of the members were instrumental in the planning and design work for a new crossing.

The Thurso Cemetery Bridge shortly before it was washed away.
